Working Process of Water Chiller in Industrial or Other Buildings


In industry or building applications, a water chiller operates by pumping a chilled water loop to provide process or space cooling to the system via a closed refrigeration loop.


Main Working Process


  • Heat Absorption (Evaporator):

    • Process starts with warm water or process fluid that is coming back out of the building or equipment into the evaporator.

    • Refrigerant cools the fluid and the refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator where the heat in this water is absorbed by the refrigerant.

  • Compression (Compressor):

    • Gas is now refrigerant which is pulled into the compressor where it is pressurised and made hot.

    • And Cycle is driven by the compressor energy input (which is usually electric).

  • Condensation (Condenser):

    • Hot and pressurized refrigerant gas is directed into the condenser where it releases heat to the environment- either to a cooling tower water or a cooling tower air.

    • Refrigerant is condensed into high-pressure liquid.

  • Expansion (Expansion Valve):

    • Cooling liquid is forced through an expansion valve and its pressure decreases quickly resulting in a drastic decrease in its temperature.

    • Cold/low-pressure refrigerant is then pumped back to the evaporator and this process is repeated.

Water Circulation


  • Chilled water is pumped back to the air handling units or industrial processes within the building presented as a new chilled water.

  • Heat is dissipated out of spaces or equipment and passed into the chiller water and the process repeats again as the hot water comes back.
